Moon Mythology >> Other Characters
This section deals with the mythology surrounding a bunch of miscellaneous characters. The information in this section has been researched from many sources and presented to you here.

Artemis
Artemis is the guardian cat who is teamed up with Sailor Venus.

Myth:Artemis
Pronounced:ahr'-tuh-mis
Origin:Greek
Character:Artemis

Mythology: Artemis was the daughter of Leto and Zeus, and twin sister of Apollo. She is a goddess of archery, the hunt, and was a defender of wild animals, children, and weak things. In Classical Greek literature she was characterized as a virgin who would punish those who would violate this state. She insisted that all her attendants were virgins and she defended virginity among mortal men and women. She was held to bring death to women as her brother Apollo was said to bring natural death to men. She was often depicted with the crescent of the moon above her forehead and was sometimes identified with Selene. She was armed with a bow and arrows which were made by Hephaestus and the Cyclopes.

Connections: He is the white ailen cat who is teamed up with Sailor Venus, whom is a direct opposite in mythology (Venus being a very sexual goddess and Artemis being a virgin goddess). Artemis bears the crescent mark on his head as does his mythological counterpart. He is also white which is a color that is usually associated with virgins and purity.

Deimos
Deimos is one of Rei's crows (and in the manga a guardian of Sailor Mars).

Myth:Deimos
Pronounced:...
Origin:Greek
Character:Deimos

Mythology: Deimos is the son of Ares & Aphrodite and brother of Phobos (as well as Harmonia). He is the personification of dread and his name, Deimos means "fear". He and his brother, personifications of fear, would accompany their father on the battlefield when he [Ares] would create a storm of fury and make men mad with war and slaughter.

Connections: Deimos is one of the two crows that protect Sailor Mars. In the anime there is not much to them. They never change form. In the manga, however, the crow became a sprite -like woman called Deimos. Interestingly, Deimos is one of the two moons that revolve around the planet of Mars.

Diana
Diana is the future child... er, kitten of Luna and Artemis as well as Chibi Usa's friend.

Myth:Diana / Artemis
Pronounced:... / ahr'-tuh-mis
Origin:Roman / Greek
Character:Diana

Mythology: Diana was the Roman goddess of nature, fertility, and childbirth. Diana was also a moon goddess and was worshipped on the mountain Tifata near Capua and in sacred forests (such as Aricia in Latium). Her priest lived in Aricia and if a man was able to kill him with a bough broken from a tree in this forest, he would become priest himself. She was mainly worshipped by the lower class and slaves. She was idenitified with the Greek goddess Artemis.

Connections: Diana was a moon goddess, as were Artemis and Luna. Being so closely connected to these other moon goddesses was it any wonder that this kitten came to be related to Luna and Artemis in the manga and anime?

Helios
Helios is the boy from the world of Elysion.

Myth:Helios
Pronounced:hee'-lee-ahs
Origin:Greek
Character:Helios

Mythology: Helios was the god of the son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia as well as the brother to Selene and Eos. He was a god of the sun and it was his responsibility to drive his chariot (a gift from Hephaestus which was made of gold with wheel spokes of silver, and rows of chrysolites and diamonds along the seat) across the sky each day with the sun following behind. His sister Eos would announce his arrival each morning by the cock's crowing. In the evening, as the sun went down, he would return to the Islands of the Blessed, where he would let his horses graze in a pasture until the following morning. Helios was equipped with arrows (the sun's rays) and had a large number of children by his wife (Perse) and various mistresses.

Submitted by Tiff: One story concerning Helios is about his son Phaton, whose mother was a mortal woman. He allowed Phaton to drive his chariot after promising his son that he would give him anything he desired. He tried to talk Phaton out of it, but to no avail. The young boy lost control of the chariot and burned much of the Earth as a result. Zeus struck him dead before anymore damage was done.

Connections: Helios' role in the manga and anime concerned the Golden Crystal, Mamoru, Earth, and dreams. Mamoru is said to be the protector of Earth and is the carrier of the Golden Crystal. As Selene/Usagi carries a theme of the night and Moon, Mamoru carries a theme of day and Sun, Helios is one of those relations. Helios also had steeds of fire that would fly him across the sky. In the anime he takes the form of a flying horse, Pegasus, while in the manga Pegasus turns out to be his favorite steed.

Luna
Luna is the guardian cat who is teamed up with Sailor Moon.

Myth:Luna / Selene
Pronounced:LOO-n / suh-lee'-nee
Origin:Roman / Greek
Character:Luna

Mythology: Luna is the goddess of the moon and is considered to be the equivalent to the Greek moon goddess Selene. She was at one point identified with Diana and Hecate. Her temple, on the Aventine Hill, was erected in the 6th century BC but was destroyed by the great fire under Nero's regime.

Connections: Being the equivelent to Selene would explain why she was chosen to be the guardian of the moon princess in the Sailormoon anime and manga.

Pegasus
Pegasus was the beautiful winged horse that appeared in Chibi Usa's dreams.

Myth:Pegasus
Pronounced:peg'-uh-suhs
Origin:Greek
Character:Pegasus

Mythology: Pegasus was the winged horse, born of Poseidon and Medusa. When the gorgon's head was cut off by Perseus, Pegasus sprung from her pregant body, or in other versions, from her blood. The horse would not allow any man to ride it but Bellerophon was able to capture him with a golden bridle, given to him as a gift by Athena. There are a a few versions as to what happened when Bellerophon mounted the great beast. One was that Pegasus threw him off and rose to the heavens where he became a constellation. Another was that Bellerophon killed the monster Chimera while riding Pegasus and when he attemped to ride to the summit of Mount Olympus, Zeus sent a gadfly to sting the horse, and it threw Bellerophon off its back.

Connections: Pegasus did not wish to be ridden and wished even less to be captured. In the anime he was fleeing from the Dead Moon Circus and when captured the Amazones Quartetto placed a bridle upon him in hopes to ride him.

Phobos
Phobos is one of Rei's crows (and in the manga a guardian of Sailor Mars).

Myth:Phobos
Pronounced:fo'-bos
Origin:Greek
Character:Phobos

Mythology: Phobos is the son of Ares & Aphrodite and brother of Phobos (as well as Harmonia). He is the personification of fear and terror and his name, Phobos means "fright". He and his brother, personifications of fear, would accompany their father on the battlefield when he [Ares] would create a storm of fury and make men mad with war and slaughter.

Connections: Phobos is one of the two crows that protect Sailor Mars. In the anime there is not much to them. They never change form. In the manga, however, the crow became a sprite -like woman called Phobos. Interestingly, Phobos is one of the two moons that revolve around the planet of Mars.
