Moon Mythology >> Outer Solar System Soldiers This section deals with the mythology surrounding Pluto, Uranus, Neptune, & Saturn. The information in this section has been researched from many sources and presented to you here.
Sailor Pluto
Mythology: Pluto was the Roman god of the underworld and the judge of the dead. He was also the son of Saturn and brother to Jupiter and Neptune (each of the brothers took a domain: Jupiter took the sky, Neptune took the sea, and Pluto took the underworld, leaving the Earth as neutral territory). He was the husband of Proserpina (Greek name, Persephone) whom he kidnapped her and dragged into the underworld. People referred to Pluto as the rich one because he owned all the wealth in the ground and were afraid to say his real name because they were afraid it might attract his attention. Black sheep were offered to him as sacrifices. Pluto was known as a pitiless god because if a mortal entered his Underworld they could never hope to return. Hades - Hades was the god of the dead and ruler of a subterranean kingdom, the "Underworld". He was a son of Chonos and Rhea. His siblings were Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia, and Demeter. His name was considered unlucky and seldom used. Instead the name Plouton (Pluto), meaning "the Rich", was used. He was also called Eubouleus "Good Councilor", Klymenos "Renowned", Polydegmon "the Hospitable", Pylartes "the Gate-fastener", and Stygeros "the Hateful". He was also know as Zeus Katachthonios "Zeus of the Underworld". Though he was portrayed as a grim, cold deity, ruthlessly applying the rules of his kingdom without discrimination he was never thought of as evil. Rather than a hell his world was considered a jail and Hades was often portrayed holding a key. Connections: Being a god of the underworld and of the dead, it can seen where time would be a factor. Death is a product of time and as Sailor Pluto is the guardian of Time-Space she watches people come and go through the world. Her 'Dead Scream' attack would also definitely be attributed to the Roman god Pluto's underworld domain. And Hades' key would account for the Time Key Sailor Pluto holds as she is most often portrayed with it.
Sailor Uranus
Mythology: Uranus, also known as Ouranos, was the embodiment of the sky or heavens, and known as the god of the sky. He was the first son of Gaia, the earth, and he also became her husband. According to Hesiod, their children included the Titans (six sons & six daughters), the Cyclopes, the three monsters known as the Hecatonchires (who each had one hundred hands and fifty heads), and the Erinyes who were spirits of punishment and goddesses of vengeance. After Uranus had been castrated, his blood fell to earth (Gaia) and conceived the Giants. In some versions Aphrodite is believed to have risen from the foam created by the sex organs of Uranus after they were cast into the sea by his son Cronus. Connections: Sailor Uranus' mythological counterpart was the god of the sky, which is only natural that she gained the power of that element as a Sailor Soldier.
Sailor Neptune
Mythology: Neptune was the Roman god of the sea and brother to Jupiter and Pluto. He was not a very powerful god, and little is known of his origin. When he was first introduced in Rome, he already had acquired the characteristics of the Greek Poseidon. Even though his cult grew after his association with Poseidon he still was not as popular among sailors as Poseidon was among Greek mariners. Poseidon - He was the god of the seas and waters and is also associated with earthquakes. When Poseidon would take part in battle -arriving in his chariot- Hades was afraid that the ground would collapse under the earthquakes he created, and the roof of the Underworld would cave in. The animals chiefly associated with him were horses and bulls. He was represented as a tall, bearded figure holding a trident and sometimes a fish. Poseidon assumed many of the attributes of older, more peaceful sea gods (Nereus, Phorcys, and Proteus) although he is portrayed as more violent, bad-tempered, vindictive, and dangerous. Connections: Sailor Neptune, like her mythological counterparts, possesses the power of the sea though she does not seem to associated with earthquakes.
Sailor Saturn
Mythology: Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture concerned with the sowing of the seeds and is regarded as the father of Jupiter, Ceres, Juno, and many others. His wife was Lua. Sometimes he was paired with Ops, the goddess of abundance, but more often she is paired with Consus. It was believed that he was not native to Italy, but instead a foreigner who had taken refuge in Latium after fleeing from Jupiter. This event heralded a period of peace, happiness and prosperity, the Golden Age. Cronus - Cronus was the youngest of the children of Uranus and Gaia. His mother was greatly pained from the discomfort of carrying her offspring (from Uranus) and when she asked her children for help her with her plan only Cronus agreed. Cronus, given an adamantine sickle as a weapon, waited for Uranus to try to sleep with his mother. When he appeared, Cronus cut off his genitalia and flung them into the sea, ending his mother's pain of producing more offspring with Uranus. Once his father was releaved of his genitals Cronus became king and me married his sister Rhea. He quickly became as brutal as his father. Cronus was often portrayed with the sickle to gather the harvest but it was also the weapon that he used to castrate his father. Quote from Who's Who in Classical Mythology: "According to a different tradition, Cronus had not been a grim tyrant but a benign ruler who presided over a blessed golden age; after his deposition he left to become ruler of the Isles of the Blessed in the Weatern Ocean. This aspect of Cronus links him with Saturn, the Roman god with whom he was identified. Some Greeks associated Cronus' name wrongly, with the chronos (time), and consequently depicted him as an old man with a scythe, Father Time." Connections: Sailor Saturn is the soldier of ruin and birth. Her counterpart may not seem to fit with her character but look closer. Saturn is the one who controls agriculture, and what grows or dies it connects with Sailor Saturn's powers of death. Submitted by Myrna: Saturday, or Samedi, is named after Saturn.
